MSN Program Details: If you are a registered nurse searching for the best AGNP programs in Rhode Island, I recommend considering the University of Rhode Island. The university offers a master’s degree program in nursing designed to prepare you to provide care to individuals, families, and communities as an Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner.

The MSN AGNP program is available part-time or full-time. New admissions occur in the fall semester annually and takes four semesters to complete, including one summer semester. The program is primarily in person with classes held at the Nursing Education Center on the Providence campus.

The program consists of a 42-credit curriculum comprised of core nursing theory, foundational science, interdisciplinary, and advanced practice courses and practicum courses. Some of the classes you will take include Pharmacotherapeutics, Evidence-Based Strategies to Improve Health, Translating Research Evidence into Practice, and Advanced Pathophysiology. The program requires the completion of at least 750 clinical practicum hours. All clinicals are completed under the supervision of a physician or nurse practitioner and overseen by a graduate faculty member.


MSN Admission Requirements: Candidates seeking admission to the MSN AGNP program at the University of Rhode Island apply directly through the URI Graduate School. Applicants must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from an AACN- or NLN-accredited institution and have, or be eligible for, RN licensure in Rhode Island. Prospective students are required to submit a Goals Statement, three letters of recommendation (professional and academic), a curriculum vitae or resume, and transcripts from all post-secondary institutions. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and completion of a basic statistics course is required. Candidates with clinical nursing experience are preferred.

Post-Master’s Certificate Program Details: The Post-Master’s Certificate program offers an accelerated path for master’s-prepared nurses who wish to seek certification as a Primary Care AGNP. New classes begin in the fall each year. The program features a 19-credit curriculum that includes 750 clinical hours. However, a GAP analysis is conducted to compare previous coursework to certificate requirements and develop a personalized plan of study.


Post-Master’s Certificate Admission Requirements: The Post-Master’s Certificate program requires applicants to have a Master’s degree in nursing earned from a program accredited by the National League for Nursing or the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and to hold a current, unrestricted RN license in Rhode Island. Candidates must complete an online application and submit a Goals Statement, professional resume or CV, three letters of recommendation, and official transcripts from all post-secondary schools previously attended. An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher and a graduate GPA of 3.3 or higher is required.

MSN Program Details: The MSN program at Rhode Island College is an excellent option for RNs with a bachelor’s degree in nursing who wish to pursue preparation as an Acute Care Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner. The program admits students in the fall annually.

This AGNP program in Rhode Island requires the completion of 45 credits. You will take classes, including Advanced Pathophysiology, Adult Health & Illness for Nurse Practitioners, and Evidence-Based Practice for Advanced Nursing. The program includes 750 clinical hours. Clinical placements are arranged collaboratively between clinical faculty, the clinical preceptor, and the student.


MSN Admission Requirements: Admission to the MSN program at Rhode Island College is competitive. Candidates must have a baccalaureate degree in nursing from a CCNE- or NLNAC-accredited program, an unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in Rhode Island, and one year of relevant acute care experience. Applicants are required to submit an online application and provide a professional resume, professional references, a Letter of Intent, and official transcripts from all colleges or universities previously attended. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all undergraduate coursework is required, as well as completion of a statistics course with a grade of “C” or better. An interview with program faculty may also be required.

Certificate of Graduate Studies Program Details: If you already hold a master’s degree in nursing and wish to expand upon your current role by becoming certified as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, the Certificate of Graduate Studies at Rhode Island College is a great option. The program can be completed in three semesters.

The Certificate of Graduate Studies pathway requires the completion of at least 18 credits. A review of your master’s degree transcripts will be utilized to determine an individualized study plan. If you are not a currently certified APRN or have not taken the prerequisites Advanced Pharmacology, Advanced Health Assessment, and Advanced Pathophysiology, those courses will be added to your plan.


Certificate of Graduate Studies Admission Requirements: To be eligible for admission to the CGS program, candidates must have a current, unrestricted RN license in Rhode Island and hold a master’s or doctorate degree in nursing from an accredited program. Applicants are required to submit three professional recommendations, a Letter of Intent outlining a Statement of Goals, and official undergraduate and graduate transcripts. A minimum master’s degree GPA of 3.0 is required, and an admission interview may be requested.
