RN-to-MSN Program Details: Are you a registered nurse with hopes of becoming an Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner? Have you searched for AGNP programs in Mississippi but don’t know where to begin? If so, I’d like to recommend the University of Mississippi Medical Center. UMMC offers four pathways for registered nurses to specialize in the Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner specialty.

The RN-to-MSN program admits students in the summer and takes six semesters to complete. Classes are predominately online, making this program an excellent choice for nurses who need to continue working or have to focus on other responsibilities while earning a degree.

The 61-credit curriculum features classes, including Clinical Pharmacotherapeutics, Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Assessment, Management & Evaluation, Advanced Physiology & Pathophysiology, and Healthcare Leadership & Collaboration. The program includes 680 clinical practicum hours.

RN-to-MSN Admission Requirements: Eligible candidates for the RN-to-MSN program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center possess an associate degree or diploma in nursing from an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited nursing program, which included clinical practice courses. Applicants must have a current, unrestricted RN license with eligibility to practice in Mississippi and have at least one year of work experience in a critical care or emergency department setting.

Prospective students are required to complete an online application, pay a nonrefundable application fee, and submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities previously attended. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is preferred. However, if the 3.0 cumulative GPA is not met, a cumulative nursing GPA of 3.0 or higher may be considered. Candidates must show completion of all prerequisite courses with a grade of “C” or better. Preadmission counseling and an interview with program faculty are also required.

MSN Program Details: If you have a bachelor’s degree in nursing and want to earn a master’s and specialize as an Acute Care Adult Gerontology NP, the MSN program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is a great option. New classes begin in the fall semester annually. The program takes five semesters to complete on a full-time basis.

The MSN AGNP program is offered with a combination of hybrid, online, and campus learning modalities. Half of the required courses meet on campus up to four times per semester, while all other classes are either hybrid or online. Online courses may be synchronous or asynchronous at the instructor’s discretion.

The MSN Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP program is a 45-credit pathway. The program includes 630 hours of guided clinical experience. All clinicals are completed under the supervision of an advanced practice nurse or physician. 245 hours of the required clinicals must be completed at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. All clinicals must occur in the state of Mississippi.

MSN Admission Requirements: Candidates seeking admission to the MSN program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center must have a baccalaureate degree in nursing from an institution accredited by the ACEN or CCNE. You are required to show evidence of a current, unencumbered RN license with eligibility to practice in Mississippi and have at least one year of clinical nursing experience in an emergency care or critical care setting. In addition to completing an online application, you must submit official transcripts reflecting a cumulative college GPA of 3.0 or higher. In some cases, a cumulative nursing GPA of 3.0 or higher may be considered. An interview with the program faculty is required before an official admission offer is extended.

BSN-to-DNP Program Details: Baccalaureate-prepared RNs also have the option of pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at UMMC while studying to become an Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP. The program can be completed in as few as eight semesters or up to 14 semesters, depending on whether you enroll part-time or full-time. The BSN-to-DNP program admits students once each year in the fall semester.

This AGNP program in Mississippi features a 74-credit curriculum that consists of online course delivery combined with face-to-face sessions and clinical practicums. You will take advanced nursing courses like Clinical Applied Epidemiology, Application & Interpretation of Acute Care Diagnostic Modalities, and Biostatistics, as well as DNP courses and complete a DNP Scholarly Project. The program includes 1,230 total clinical hours, including direct patient care and Scholarly Project hours.

BSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: Prospective students seeking admission to the BSN-to-DNP program must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, evidence of an unencumbered RN license with eligibility to practice in the state of Mississippi, and one year of clinical experience as an RN in critical care or an emergency setting. Candidates are required to submit three letters of reference, a Personal Statement, and official transcripts from all post-secondary schools previously attended.

An overall grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale is required (A nursing GPA of 3.2 may be considered if your cumulative GPA is less than 3.2). Additionally, your transcripts should show completion of at least one statistics course and one research course at either the undergraduate or graduate level.

Post-Graduate Certificate Program Details: If you are an advanced practice registered nurse who wishes to seek academic preparation as an Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, UMMC’s Post-Graduate Certificate program is an option worth considering. The program typically admits new students once per year in August.

The curriculum for the Post-Graduate Certificate pathway consists of supportive science and specialty clinical courses. An individualized plan of study will be prepared for you by your academic advisor upon enrollment based on your previous graduate nursing coursework. Students in this pathway complete 500 to 630 clinical hours depending on their previous work experience.

Post-Graduate Certificate Admission Requirements: Individuals interested in applying for the Post-Graduate Certificate program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center are required to hold a Master’s degree in nursing from an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited nursing program and have a current, unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in the U.S. and be eligible for practice in Mississippi. One year of work experience as a registered nurse in critical care or emergency care is required.

Applicants must complete an online application and submit a professional resume and copies of all post-secondary transcripts. An overall GPA of 3.0 is preferred, but a nursing GPA of 3.0 or higher may be considered. Proof of completion of an undergraduate or graduate statistics course is required. Preadmission counseling and an admission interview may also be required.
