MSN Program Details: If you are a registered nurse with aspirations to become an Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, finding a high-quality program with a proven record of success is crucial. You will find some of the best options for AGNP programs in Nevada at the University of Nevada. One of the three AGNP pathways the university offers is the MSN program. Through the Master of Science in Nursing program, you can opt to specialize as an Acute Care Adult Gerontology NP or a Primary Care Adult Gerontology NP.
The MSN Acute Care AGNP program requires a minimum of 48 credits. In this program, you will study Advanced Prescribing Pharmacology for the Acutely Ill Patient, Populations & Aggregate Health Issues, Management of Comorbid Conditions in Acute Care, and Management of Chronic Illness in Acute Care. Four clinical practicums complement clinical courses to ensure you have adequate hands-on learning opportunities in the program. This pathway includes a minimum of 780 clinical practicum hours.
The MSN Primary Care AGNP program features a 43-45-credit curriculum and includes 660 practicum hours. In this pathway, you will take classes, including Advanced Ambulatory Pharmacology, Role of the NP in Health Promotion and Management of Men & Women in Primary Healthcare, Role Managing Adult/Gerontology Chronic Illnesses in Primary Care, and Considerations for Management of the Geriatric Population.
MSN Admission Requirements: Admission to the MSN program at the University of Nevada is a two-step process. Candidates must meet the university’s Graduate School requirements as well as the School of Nursing MSN program requirements. Candidates must hold a baccalaureate degree with an upper-division major in nursing earned from an NLNAC- or CCNE-accredited nursing program and have verification of a current, unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in the U.S. and be eligible to practice in Nevada.
In addition to completing admission applications, you must submit a Statement of Intent describing your graduate study goals, three letters of recommendation, and official transcripts from all colleges or universities you have attended. Your transcripts should reflect an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher and show successful completion of a graduate-level Applied Statistics course prior to fall admission.
BSN-to-DNP Program Details: The University of Nevada also offers a post-bachelor’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program, which gives you the opportunity to earn a terminal clinical practice degree while specializing as either an Acute or Primary Care Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner. This AGNP program in Nevada admits students once per year in the fall.
Both pathways offer part-time and full-time enrollment options, allowing you to choose a schedule that works best for you. Part-time students graduate in four years, while full-time students typically complete the program in three years. Coursework for the BSN-to-DNP program is primarily online. A few campus visits are required, as well as face-to-face patient care clinical experiences.
The Acute Care AGNP pathway of the DNP program is a 72-credit pathway designed to prepare you to diagnose and treat acutely ill adult and geriatric patients and their families. The program incorporates 780 specialty-specific clinical hours and an additional 240 DNP Project and Residency practicum hours.
The Primary Care AGNP pathway of the BSN-to-DNP program requires you to complete 67 credits and at least 1,000 clinical hours. In this program, you will study Healthcare Information Systems & Technology, Advanced Pathophysiology, Scientific Underpinnings & Translational Evidence for the DNP, and Role of the AGPCNP in Managing Complex Illness in Primary Care.
BSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: To be eligible for admission to the BSN-to-DNP program at the University of Nevada, candidates must possess a baccalaureate degree in nursing from a CCNE- or NLNAC-accredited nursing school and have a current, unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in the United States. You must be eligible to practice as an RN in Nevada.
Candidates are required to submit a current resume, three letters of recommendation, a Statement of Intent, and official transcripts from all colleges or universities previously attended. An overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better is required. Additionally, your transcripts should show that you have completed Statistics, Growth and Development (Lifespan), Basic Research, and Health Assessment at the baccalaureate level and a graduate-level Statistics course. An interview with program faculty may be required.
Post-Master’s Certificate Program Details: If you have earned a master’s degree in nursing and now wish to add the Acute Care Adult Gerontology NP certification as a specialty, the Post-Master’s Certificate program at the University of Nevada is an excellent option. The program admits students twice each year in the fall and spring semesters. Online coursework and clinicals close to your home region make this a great choice for working professionals.
Students enrolled in this Post-Master’s Certificate program complete between 17 and 26 credits. A plan of study will be determined after evaluating your previous transcripts and determining which credits you previously took that are transferable. The curriculum includes four practicum experiences through which you will complete at least 500 hours of direct patient care.
Post-Master’s Certificate Admission Requirements: Candidates seeking admission to the Post-Master’s Certificate program must have a Master of Science in Nursing degree earned from an NLN- or CCNE-accredited nursing program, a current unencumbered RN license in Nevada (or eligibility to practice in Nevada), and a cumulative college grade point average of 3.0 or higher. You are required to apply to both the University’s Graduate School and the Orvis School of Nursing. Additionally, you must provide a professional resume, a Letter of Intent, and three letters of recommendation.
