BSN-to-DNP Program Details: If you are a registered nurse with dreams of becoming an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, finding the right school is crucial. For example, the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque is home to the best options for AGNP programs in New Mexico.
At the University of New Mexico, baccalaureate-prepared registered nurses can earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice specializing as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. The BSN-to-DNP program is designed to be completed in two years and nine months or eight terms. The hybrid format includes online coursework and on-site laboratory simulations.
The post-bachelor’s DNP AGNP program is a 65-credit pathway. The curriculum consists of Evidence-Based Practice, Advanced Practice RN Core, DNP Systems Thinking & Project core, DNP Core, and Didactic and Clinical AG-ACNP courses. Some of the classes you will take in this program include Managing Emergency & Critical Illness in the Adult/Gerontology Patient, Managing the Acute & Complex/Chronically Ill Adult/Gerontology Patient, Pharmacological Principles of Clinical Therapeutics, and Translation of Evidence for Healthcare Practice, Policy & Evaluation.
The program includes 50 simulation hours, 750 direct patient care clinical hours, and 300 DNP Project hours. Clinical practicums occur at various inpatient and outpatient facilities in and around New Mexico. Upon completion of the program, you will be eligible to take the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification examination administered by The American Nurses Credentialing Center or The American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
BSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: Candidates seeking admission to the BSN-to-DNP Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner program must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university OR an Associate Degree in Nursing and a non-nursing bachelor's degree. Prospective students must have a current, unencumbered RN license and at least one year of work experience as a registered nurse or a relevant field prior to beginning the program.
All applicants are required to complete a supplemental application for admission to UNM. Additionally, candidates are required to submit a completed NursingCAS application, three essay responses, three letters of recommendation, a current resume or curriculum vitae, and official transcripts from all post-secondary schools previously attended. Transcripts should reflect a minimum college grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Post-Graduate Certificate Program Details: If you have already earned a graduate degree in nursing and wish to specialize as an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, the Post-Graduate Certificate program at the University of New Mexico is an excellent option. The program admits students once each year in the spring.
This Post-Graduate Certificate AGNP program in New Mexico offers synchronous, evidence-based online education and hands-on simulation and teaching via a hybrid learning format. All student records are evaluated via a GAP analysis to determine a customized curriculum plan to meet the Certificate program's requirements. You will complete a minimum of 15 credits and 750 clinical hours, as designated by the Program Coordinator.
Post-Graduate Certificate Admission Requirements: To be eligible for admission to the Post-Graduate Certificate program, you must have a Master of Science in Nursing degree, or a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree earned from a nursing program accredited by the CCNE or the NLN. Candidates are required to complete an application through NursingCAS. You must provide three letters of recommendation, a curriculum vitae or resume, official transcripts to all colleges or universities you have attended, and answer three essay questions. It is recommended that applicants have at least two years of experience as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, if applicable. Candidates with a graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher are preferred. However, if your graduate GPA is less than 3.0, you may be considered on an individual basis.

As a student in the AGNP program, you will participate in Objective Structured Clinical Evaluations (OSCEs), which provide real-life scenarios to help you build clinical competencies. The school utilizes the Simulation IQ system, which provides virtual rooms for telehealth encounters, telemedicine, and standardized patient visits, simulating real patient care experiences and giving you the opportunity to learn about virtual care.
