BSN-to-DNP Program Details: As a woman, I understand the importance of having qualified healthcare providers capable of providing women’s healthcare services. As a nurse, I know that there is an unfortunate shortage of women’s health providers nationwide. If you are a nurse who is passionate about women’s health and you desire a shift in your career, becoming a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner is an excellent option.
At the University of Utah, baccalaureate-prepared RNs can pursue a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and specialize as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner or pursue dual certification through the Dual Women’s Health NP/Nurse-Midwifery program. These WHNP programs in Utah are among the top programs in the U.S. for individuals seeking preparation as practitioners in women’s health.
Both WHNP pathways feature a hybrid learning format, which combines synchronous online learning with on-campus activities and clinical practicums. The flexible structure makes this WHNP program in Utah ideal for students balancing their careers and family responsibilities. The WHNP program can be completed in eight semesters, and the Dual WHNP/Nurse-Midwifery program takes an average of nine semesters.
The curriculum plans for the WHNP programs are designed to promote clinical reasoning, ethical decision-making, and critical thinking. Students pursuing the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner pathway complete a 73-credit plan of study. The Dual WHNP/Nurse-Midwifery program features an 86-credit curriculum. Additionally, students complete a DNP Scholarly Project, which involves identifying a clinical problem, implementing an evidence-based intervention, and evaluating outcomes to improve the delivery of care.
One of my favorite things to do as a nurse educator or when working in a clinical setting was to precept nursing students during their clinical practicums. It was rewarding to share their learning experiences and to see the excitement they experienced caring for their patients. Clinical practicums are an integral part of any nursing program, and getting adequate experiences with qualified preceptors is crucial.
One of the standout features of the University of Utah’s WHNP program is that students are guaranteed clinical placements. Your Specialty Track Director and program faculty facilitate clinical placements in diverse healthcare settings across Utah, including family planning centers, OB/GYN clinics, community health organizations, reproductive endocrinology practices, and academic medical centers. A minimum of 1,000 clinical hours is required to earn the DNP degree. Clinical hours include both direct and indirect patient care, as well as leadership hours.
BSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: Admission to the BSN-to-DNP program occurs once per year in the fall. Applicants for the program must meet the admission criteria of both the College of Nursing and the University of Utah. Candidates must have an earned, or in-progress, bachelor’s degree in nursing from a regionally accredited United States college or university and an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited nursing program. Applicants whose bachelor’s degree is in progress at the time of applying must complete the degree before matriculating into the DNP program.
Eligible candidates must also have an active, unencumbered Utah state Registered Nurse license. Prospective students are required to submit a FutureU application, current transcripts for each post-secondary school attended (reflecting a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale), a resume, responses to essay questions, and three letters of recommendation.
Post-APRN Graduate Certificate Program Details: The University of Utah offers a WHNP Post-APRN Graduate Certificate program for nurses who are certified in one area of advanced practice nursing and wish to expand their scope of practice to include women’s health. New students are admitted each summer and fall semester.
Individualized study plans are designed for each student based on a review of previous transcripts. The program utilizes synchronous distance learning for course delivery. Clinical practicums are arranged collaboratively with the Specialty Track Director.
Post-APRN Graduate Certificate Admission Requirements: To be considered for admission to the Post-APRN Graduate Certificate program at the University of Utah, you must have a graduate degree in nursing (Master’s or Doctorate) from a regionally-accredited college or university and a current, unrestricted license to practice as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in at least one of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing’s jurisdictions. Candidates must provide a current resume, a copy of their APRN certification, two letters of recommendation from professional sources, and PDF copies of all post-secondary transcripts. A minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.0 is required.
