BSN-to-DNP Program Details: Choosing a graduate nursing program is about more than selecting a school. The mission of the USUHS program is “to educate safe, competent providers prepared to practice independently in response to worldwide mission in the Uniformed Services.”
The Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner program is a post-baccalaureate pathway that leads to a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. This WHNP program goes beyond traditional nurse practitioner education, integrating advanced clinical knowledge with trauma care, operational readiness, and leadership development. Students in this program are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to provide advanced practice nursing care, meeting both peacetime and operational requirements of the uniformed services.
The DNP curriculum consists of four primary domains: an advanced science core, DNP core, specialty practice, and the operational curriculum. Students learn about trauma and combat casualty care, bedside ultrasonography, and battlefield auricular acupuncture, which are unique to military training programs. The program begins with classroom-based instruction and simulation labs on campus and then progresses to immersive clinical practicums.
The program is a 103-credit pathway that takes three years to complete. The study plan features classes, including Trauma & Combat Casualty Care, Advanced Diagnosis & Management in Embryology, Gynecology & Obstetrical Care, Operational & Medical Readiness in a Changing Global Environment, and Response to (Military) Sexual Assault.
Students also gain extensive hands-on clinical experience across diverse settings, including sites both within the continental United States and outside the continental U.S. The program integrates over 1,700 direct patient care hours. In the third year of the program, students relocate to one of 12 designated sites to complete full-time clinical immersion across military and public health settings. Each student creates and implements a DNP project designed to address a healthcare system problem and completes a personal portfolio demonstrating how they achieved each of the 10 Essentials for Advanced-Level Nursing Education.
BSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: Admission to the WHNP program at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences is competitive. All applicants must be a commissioned officer or service-sponsored civilian in the United States Army, Air Force, Navy, or Public Health Service. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited university, a current, unrestricted RN license, and current BLS certification. Additionally, recent direct patient care as a registered nurse is recommended, and a minimum of 20 hours of shadowing a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner is required.
Prospective students must submit a USUHS application with an evidence-based writing requirement, a current curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, and official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Transcripts should reflect an overall GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, a combined science GPA of 3.0 or higher, and completion of a science course (anatomy, physiology, combined A&P, pathophysiology, or pharmacology) with a grade of “B” or better. An undergraduate or graduate statistics course, though not required, is recommended. If requested, applicants must complete an interview with USUHS faculty.
