Programs Offered: BSN-to-DNP and Graduate Certificate
BSN-to-DNP Program Details: Women’s health is a cornerstone of public health. However, in many communities, it is an underserved specialty within the healthcare realm. As a nurse, I have seen how misinformation and lack of access to services impact women’s health. An increased need for qualified providers often leads to a strained system, resulting in rushed visits and a lack of compassion.
If you are a registered nurse interested in providing women’s health services, becoming a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner is a career path worth considering. There are several paths you can pursue to become a Women’s Health NP. For example, the BSN-to-DNP program at Arizona State University offers an option to specialize in women’s health. The program is one of the top WHMP programs in Arizona.
The DNP WHNP program is offered in a hybrid format. Most coursework is delivered online, and students are required to travel to campus two to three times per semester. In this program, you will learn to apply evidence-based management to common and complex sexual, gynecologic, reproductive, and perimenopausal health issues, as well as uncomplicated and high-risk antepartum and postpartum care.
The 84-credit curriculum comprises core courses and specialty courses, complemented by simulated learning experiences on campus and in-person clinical practicums. Some of the classes you will take include Management of Complex & Chronic Disease in Women, Management of Common Problems in Women’s Health, Advanced Human Pathophysiology Across the Lifespan, and Advanced Pharmacotherapeutics Across the Lifespan.
The program includes 1,125 clinical hours, exceeding the American Nurses Credentialing Center recommendation of 1,000 practicum hours for DNP programs. All students complete an evidence-based doctoral applied project as the culminating event in the DNP program. For students based in Maricopa County, program faculty arrange clinical sites and preceptor assignments. If you live elsewhere, you have the option to identify your own clinical sites and preceptors and present them to the Program Director for approval.
BSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: Applicants for the BSN-to-DNP program must meet admission requirements for both the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation and the ASU Graduate College. Eligible candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in nursing from a regionally accredited and nationally recognized institution and have an unencumbered Arizona or Compact State RN license. While it is not required, candidates are encouraged to have at least one year of clinical experience working within the women’s health population.
Applicants are required to submit a graduate admission application and application fee, three letters of professional recommendation, a resume, a goal statement, an admission essay, proof of English proficiency, and official transcripts from all post-secondary schools reflecting a cumulative 3.0 grade point average or higher. All candidates participate in an in-person interview with the program faculty before receiving an official admission offer.
Graduate Certificate Program Details: The Graduate Certificate program at ASU is an excellent option for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses or doctoral-level RNs searching for a WHNP program in Arizona. The program offers a pathway for nurses to obtain additional certification as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner without requiring years of additional education. New students are admitted annually in the summer, and it typically takes an average of three semesters to complete their studies.
The GCP features online coursework and occasional on-campus visits each semester. The plan of study features specialty-focused coursework and corresponding clinical practicum experiences. Students complete 23 credit hours and 630 hours of clinical experience. The school offers practicum experiences in various areas throughout Arizona, particularly in regions where women’s health services are underrepresented. Students residing outside Maricopa County may identify clinical sites and potential preceptors near their area of residence and use them to meet clinical requirements, with approval from the College of Nursing. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the national Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner certification exam.
Graduate Certificate Admission Requirements: The Graduate Certificate program is open to candidates with a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing. Applicants must provide documentation of a current, unrestricted RN license in the state where clinicals will occur and a current APRN certification in a specialty other than women’s health. Candidates are required to submit three letters of professional recommendation, a professional resume, an admission essay, and official transcripts from all colleges or universities previously attended. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the applicable master’s or doctoral program is required. Applicants with at least one year of clinical experience working within the women’s health population are preferred. Finally, all candidates must participate in an in-person interview with the program faculty.
