MSN Program Details: If you are a baccalaureate-prepared Registered Nurse interested in seeking an advanced degree focused on women’s health, earning a Master of Science in Nursing and becoming a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner could be a great career move. Fairleigh Dickinson University offers a WHNP program in New Jersey with the option to specialize as a Women’s Health NP. The program accepts applications on a rolling admissions basis and admits new classes each fall, spring, and summer semester.
The MSN program features a primarily online learning format. Although some occasions warrant asynchronous course offerings, most coursework is synchronous. The synchronous online format gives you the flexibility of distance learning while still affording you the benefit of communication with faculty and peers in your cohort, which is something many online learners often do not experience.
The MSN Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner program has a 43-credit curriculum. After completing foundational and MSN core courses, you will transition to population-specific courses. Some of the classes in the study plan include Women’s Health Gynecologic Care, Women’s Health Obstetrics, Advanced Research & Evidence-Based Practice, and Advanced Pathophysiology. The program includes 750 clinical hours completed through four clinical courses. You will have opportunities to develop essential skills to care for women in a variety of healthcare settings under the direct supervision of experienced Women’s Health Nurse Practitioners and physicians.
MSN Admission Requirements: To be eligible for admission to the MSN program at Fairleigh Dickinson University, you must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and an active RN license in the state where you will complete your clinical practicum requirements. Fairleigh Dickinson University utilizes
NursingCAS to process applications. You are required to submit a short resume summarizing your academic history, relevant activities, healthcare experience, and any license and certification information, letters of recommendation, and transcripts from all colleges or universities you previously attended. A minimum cumulative college GPA of 2.8 is required. You may be asked to participate in a video interview as part of the application process.
Post-graduate Certificate Program Details: The Post-Graduate Certificate program is an excellent option for nurses who have already earned a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing and wish to achieve advanced preparation in population-focused care for women. The program admits students in the fall semester each year. Online coursework and a part-time schedule make this program a good option for working professionals.
The PGC pathway features a 24-credit curriculum that includes 750 clinical hours. A GAP analysis will be conducted upon your admission to the program to review your previous transcripts and to determine the need for additional coursework to fulfill the requirements to sit for national certification exams. If a personalized plan of study is needed, your academic advisor will work with you to determine an appropriate plan, with the Track Director’s approval, to ensure you meet all the requirements for national certification.
Post-graduate Certificate Admission Requirements: The Post-Graduate Certificate program is open to candidates who have earned a previous MSN or DNP degree from an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited nursing program and who have a current RN license and APRN certification. Candidates must complete an admission application and submit a resume, letters of recommendation, and transcripts from all post-secondary institutions. A minimum GPA of 2.8 for all college coursework is required. Some candidates may be required to interview with program faculty before receiving an invitation for admission. Interviews are conducted virtually and by invitation only.
Must-Know Highlights For Potential Students
• At Fairleigh Dickinson University, students in the WHNP program take an active role in identifying clinical sites and preceptors. However, that does not mean you are left without support. The APN Track Director is available to guide you through the process of securing appropriate sites and identifying qualified preceptors, making sure you have adequate clinical experiences to prepare you for practice.
• The decision to pursue a degree or new specialty certification is not one to be taken lightly. One thing I urge prospective students to consider when choosing a school is whether it has a proven record of success. Finding a school/program with high rankings from reputable sources is a good place to start. For instance, Fairleigh Dickinson University’s MSN program is ranked among the top in the nation in the 2025
U.S. News & World Report Graduate School Rankings.
• Fairleigh Dickinson University offers a broad range of financial assistance options for graduate nursing students, including Advanced Practicing Nursing Student Scholarships. Additionally, there are opportunities for grants and loans designed for nursing students. Financial aid advisors are available to answer questions and help you identify the
type of aid for which you may qualify.
• Graduates of the Fairleigh Dickinson University WHNP program consistently have exceptional first-time pass rates on national certification exams, a good indicator that the program provides a solid foundation and preparation for practice. This record of success is just one of many reasons why Fairleigh is considered home to one of the best WHNP programs in New Jersey.
• Fairleigh Dickinson University reports high job placement rates for graduates of its WHNP program. Graduates are fully prepared with the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to take on the role of a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, making them sought after by employers. Many students receive job offers while still enrolled, conditional on completing the program and passing their certification exams, while others report finding employment within six months of graduation.
• As a nurse and healthcare educator, I truly believe the only limits to one’s growth and learning potential are the limits we place on ourselves. Healthcare is a remarkable career with limitless opportunities. With advances in technology, it is important for nurses, practitioners, and all members of the interdisciplinary team to embrace changes and grow without sacrificing human dignity. One of the things I find appealing about Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College of Nursing is its adoption of humanics, which prepares students to be technologically fluent and ethically based. A humanistic approach to nursing education means you will not only be equipped to use technology to strengthen your learning, communication, and safety, but also to promote ethical judgment, human dignity, and compassion at the center of patient care.
