At Oregon Health & Science University, however, baccalaureate-prepared nurses can earn a doctoral degree in nursing and a dual certification in both primary and acute pediatric care.
The BSN-to-DNP program, one of the top pediatric nurse practitioner programs in Oregon, is completed in three years on a full-time basis. The flexible, hybrid format includes distance- and campus-based learning combined with laboratory intensives and in-person clinical hours. Admission to the program occurs annually in the fall semester.
At OHSU, the pediatric nurse practitioner program is led by renowned faculty. Program faculty are doctoral-prepared clinicians with decades of experience in clinical practice and nursing education. The dedicated faculty team will guide you as you learn to demonstrate safe care for pediatric patients and their families, use effective communication to collaborate care, and synthesize evidence-based research findings in pediatric care. Upon completion of the program, you will have the knowledge and skills needed to be an effective leader in the delivery of pediatric care, provide individualized care, and integrate leadership skills in the care of your patients.
The program features a rigorous 111-credit curriculum. The plan of study includes core nursing and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner courses (75 credits), clinical practicums (25 credits), a DNP Scholarly Project (7 credits), and elective courses (4 credits). Some of the classes included in the curriculum are Evaluation and Management of Pediatric Acute & Complex Care, The Science of Child Development, Pediatric Psychopharmacology & Interventions, and Pediatric Assessment & Diagnostics.
Students also complete over 1,000 hours of clinical experience. Clinical practicums take place in diverse acute and primary care pediatric settings, including nationally ranked children’s hospitals, pediatric clinics, pediatric intensive care units, and specialty clinics. Clinical placements are coordinated by the School of Nursing’s Clinical Placement Team, who ensure each student is matched with high-quality clinical sites and preceptors.
BSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: To be considered for admission to the BSN-to-DNP program, candidates must hold a BSN or BS with a major in nursing and have an active, unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse. Applications are to be submitted via NursingCAS. Applicants are required to submit three letters of reference, a professional resume or CV, an admission essay, and official transcripts reflecting a 3.0 or higher GPA. Additionally, completion of a college-level statistics course with a grade of “B-” or better taken within the previous five years is required. Candidates who meet all other admission criteria are required to interview with the program faculty before receiving an admission offer.
