If so, becoming an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner is a great career option. The University of Nevada, Reno’s Orvis School of Nursing offers a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner pathway that could be what you’re looking for. The university offers three PNP-AC pathways, including the Master of Science in Nursing program. The MSN program admits students twice each year in the fall and spring. Part-time and full-time enrollment options are available, allowing you to complete your program in as few as five semesters.
This pediatric nurse practitioner program in Nevada is designed for baccalaureate-prepared nurses who want to advance into advanced practice roles caring for pediatric patients from infancy through young adulthood, particularly those requiring higher-acuity care. The program features online coursework and includes a mandatory four-to-five-day campus-based immersion. The Acute Care PNP program offers a rigorous curriculum comprising 44-46 credits of coursework and 780 clinical hours. In this program, you will take classes, including Advanced Health Assessment for Pediatric Populations, Management of Chronically Ill Pediatric and Adolescent Patients, and Pediatric Wellness, Development, & Primary Care.
MSN Admission Requirements: Prospective students seeking admission to the MSN program at the University of Nevada-Reno must have completed a baccalaureate degree in nursing from a CCNE- or NLNAC-accredited nursing program and possess a current, unrestricted RN license. Along with your application, you must submit a Letter of Intent including graduate study goals, three letters of reference, a resume, a Personal Statement, and transcripts from all post-secondary institutions you previously attended. A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 is required.
BSN-to-DNP Program Details: If you want to advance your career to become a leader in clinical practice, healthcare policy, and health systems, while pursuing certification as an Acute Care Pediatric NP, the BSN-to-DNP program at the University of Nevada-Reno is an option worth considering. The program can be completed in as few as eight semesters if you enroll full-time or in 12 semesters if you choose a part-time path. New classes are admitted each spring and fall semester.
While coursework is delivered primarily online, students are required to attend a campus-based immersion before beginning clinical rotations. The program requires the completion of
76 credits. Further, you will complete over 1,000 clinical hours, comprising DNP, Project, and specialty-relevant practicums.
BSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: To be considered for admission to the BSN-to-DNP program, you must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited nursing program and have a current, unencumbered RN license. All candidates must submit a Statement of Purpose or Letter of Intent, three letters of recommendation, a current resume, and transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended. Your transcripts should reflect an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher and show completion of a graduate-level statistics course. You may also be asked to interview with program faculty.
Advanced Nursing Graduate Certificate Program Details: The Advanced Nursing Graduate Certificate program presents an attractive offer for nurses who have previously accomplished graduate-level nursing preparation and now wish to add the pediatric acute care specialization without completing another master’s or doctoral degree.
The program features a 15-credit
curriculum plan. However, a GAP analysis is conducted for all students upon admission to determine if an individualized study plan is needed to meet certification eligibility requirements. A minimum of 600 clinical hours is required to complete the certificate program.
Advanced Nursing Graduate Certificate Admission Requirements: Candidates seeking admission to the Advanced Nursing Graduate Certificate program must have a Master of Science in Nursing degree from an institution accredited by the CCNE or NLN and have a current, unrestricted license to practice as an RN in Nevada or be eligible for licensure in Nevada. You are required to submit three letters of recommendation, a Letter of Intent, and a resume that includes your academic, community service, and professional experience. You are also required to submit transcripts from all institutions showing a minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Must-Know Highlights For Potential Students
• One major advantage for students in the pediatric nurse practitioner programs at UN-R is that the Orvis School of Nursing secures clinical placements. Program faculty and clinical coordinators vet preceptors throughout Nevada and assign students to approved preceptors. Please note that if you live outside of Nevada, you may be expected to take a more proactive role in collaborating with clinical coordinators to identify clinical sites and preceptors in your area.
• As a nurse educator, I understand the stress many students face when balancing school and work schedules. At the University of Nevada-Reno, the online learning format helps ease some of the stress, allowing you to continue working while pursuing your degree.
• At the University of Nevada-Reno, the pediatric nurse practitioner program’s curriculum is designed to prepare you for the Pediatric Nurse Certification Board’s CPNP-AC certification exam. Graduates of each PNP pathway have excellent first-time pass rates on national certification exams, which is just one more reason it is considered one of the best pediatric nurse practitioner programs in Nevada.
• As a student in the UN-R pediatric nurse practitioner program, you will work closely with personal academic advisors, faculty, and preceptors. Each student is assigned an advisor who works with them throughout the program. Additionally, faculty are easily accessible and dedicated to promoting your success.
