Programs Offered: BSN-to-DNP and Accelerated Bachelor-to-FNP
BSN-to-DNP Program Details: Are you a registered nurse in or near Oregon who is dreaming of becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner? Do you have a bachelor’s degree but feel you have what it takes to earn a doctorate in nursing? Maybe you have been searching for FNP programs in Oregon but are unsure where to begin. If so, the BSN-to-DNP FNP program at Oregon Health & Sciences University is a program I recommend considering!
New cohorts are admitted to the program in the fall term each year, and it takes an average of eleven terms or three years to complete. The program is available in-person on the Portland campus. Additionally, a distance learning option is available for rural students across the state. Distance-learning students complete most coursework online but are required to travel to campus once or twice per semester for some in-person coursework, clinical simulations, advising, and testing.
The post-baccalaureate to DNP FNP program is a 115-credit pathway, featuring a rich, rigorous curriculum. Your plan of study will include a wide range of topics such as advanced pathophysiology, advanced health assessment, health promotion and management of chronic and acute illnesses. You will take classes like Informatics & Technology for Healthcare, Principles of Pharmacology & Prescribing for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Family Primary Care Management, and Professional Development for the Family Nurse Practitioner.
Coursework is combined with over 1,000 hours of precepted clinical practicum. Clinicals occur in various clinical settings, including private practices, rural clinics, tribal clinics, school-based clinics, and federally qualified health centers. Additionally, you will complete a four-week clinical placement at one of the OHSU rural campuses. The rural campus placement provides opportunities to develop intensive clinical and interprofessional experiences as they relate to providing rural healthcare services.
Clinical placements and preceptors are arranged for you by OHSU. The school has partnerships with top healthcare providers and facilities in the state and works closely with these partners and preceptors to ensure you have the best clinical learning experience possible.
BSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: If you desire admission to the BSN-to-DNP FNP program at Oregon Health & Sciences University, you must have a B.S. or B.S.N. in nursing by the start of the program and an unrestricted RN license before beginning your first clinical courses. You may apply by submitting an application through NursingCAS. You will also enter your college courses and send transcripts to NursingCAS.
Applicants are required to submit transcripts reflecting a minimum college GPA of 3.0 and proof of completing a statistics course with a grade of “B” or higher within the previous five years. Additional documentation needed for the admissions review includes three letters of reference, an admission essay, and a resume. Eligible candidates will be invited to interview with program faculty.
Accelerated Bachelor-to-FNP Program Details: If you have a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing field but wish to become a Family Nurse Practitioner, you can accomplish that goal at Oregon Health & Sciences University. The university offers an opportunity for you to earn a bachelor's degree in just 15 months and then transfer directly to the DNP-Family Nurse Practitioner pathway.
To complete the accelerated BSN at OHSU, you need 180 total credits. The total credits for the BSN portion of the program include 108 non-nursing credits from your previous non-nursing bachelor’s degree and 72 nursing credits, which you will accomplish by completing both lower- and upper-level nursing classes in the program. This portion of the program consists of in-person learning on campus and hands-on clinical practicums, which are arranged by OHSU faculty and completed in nearby clinical settings.
After completing the accelerated BSN degree, you will transition directly to the post-bachelor’s DNP program, focusing on the Family Nurse Practitioner specialization. This portion of the accelerated Bachelor-to-FNP program requires you to complete 115 credits, including core nursing courses, FNP courses, and clinical practicums. You will complete 1,000 clinical hours in this portion of the program.
Accelerated Bachelor-to-FNP Admission Requirements: The accelerated Bachelor-to-FNP program in Oregon at OHSU is available to candidates who have accomplished a non-nursing baccalaureate degree and meet program admission criteria, including the following. Applicants are required to complete an admission application and submit transcripts through NursingCAS. Applicants for this program option need a "B-" or higher on all prerequisite courses and cumulative and prerequisite GPAs of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, one anatomy and physiology course with lab, and a “B-” or higher in each prerequisite course completed. In some cases, the admissions committee chooses to interview candidates. The committee will notify you if you are chosen for an admissions interview.

• Oregon Health & Sciences University believes students should have access to faculty and preceptors to help promote their success. To ensure individualized attention, the school limits cohorts to a maximum of 25 students, resulting in an overall faculty-to-student ratio of 1:3.
2. University of Portland - Portland
Programs Offered: DNP (BSN-to-DNP & MSN-to-DNP)
BSN-to-DNP Program Details: The University of Portland offers a few options for prospective students seeking an FNP program in Oregon. One option is the BSN-to-DNP program with a Family Nurse Practitioner concentration. Upon completion of the program, you will be eligible to sit for the national FNP certification exam through the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
The BSN-to-DNP program admits students once per year, typically in the fall semester, and is designed to be completed in three years on a full-time basis. This program features a hybrid format, which combines online learning with weekend immersions on campus once each month.
The curriculum plan requires you to complete 72 credits. After completing core nursing courses in your first year, you will then begin taking FNP specialty courses and clinicals. You will study Foundations of Clinical Management & Role Development for Primary Care Nurse Practitioners, Primary Care Management: Health Promotion & Acute Conditions, and Management of Complex Conditions in Primary Care.
This post-bachelor’s DNP Family Nurse Practitioner program includes 1,020 clinical hours. You will complete 900 hours of direct patient care and 120 hours of DNP Project practicum hours.
BSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: If you wish to enroll in the BSN-to-DNP at the University of Portland, you need a bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited national nursing accrediting body and an unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in the state where you will complete clinicals. (An Oregon RN license is recommended.)
You may begin the admission process by creating an account and completing a Graduate School Application. Applicants are required to submit a DNP Writing Sample by completing essay prompts, which are provided in the application. Additionally, you must submit a current resume or curriculum vitae and official transcripts from any college or university you have attended. Transcripts should reflect a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for your most recently completed nursing program.
MSN-to-DNP Program Details: If you are an RN with a master’s degree in nursing, you can earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice and specialize as a Family Nurse Practitioner through the MSN-to-DNP program at the University of Portland. The program utilizes in-person weekend immersion sessions and web-based learning modalities. Depending on your previous academic experience and eligible transfer credits, you can complete the program in two- to two-and-a-half years. New students are admitted each year in the fall semester.
To earn the DNP specializing in Family Practice at the University of Portland, you must complete a minimum of 72 total credits. Upon approval of the School of Nursing & Health Innovations, you may transfer up to 12 credit hours from your master’s nursing program. Therefore, based on a GAP analysis of your college transcripts, you may only need 60 credits to complete the FNP program.
All DNP students must complete at least 1,000 post-baccalaureate clinical hours. The program's curriculum includes four FNP clinical practicums, a Directed DNP Clinical, and a DNP Scholarly Project, through which you will earn the required clinical hours. The actual number of clinical hours you need to complete to earn the DNP will be determined by the number of clinical hours from your master’s nursing program that are deemed eligible for transfer.
MSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: Admission criteria for the MSN-to-DNP Family Nurse Practitioner program include the following. Candidates should possess a master’s degree in nursing from a nationally accredited nursing program and have a current, unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse. Although RN licensure in Oregon is recommended, RN licensure in the state where you will complete clinicals is mandatory.
In addition to completing an admissions application, applicants must provide a DNP writing sample, a current resume, three letters of recommendation, and official transcripts from all postsecondary schools they have attended. An admission interview may be required upon request of the School of Nursing & Health Innovations.
