1. University of Wyoming - Laramie
Programs Offered: BSN-to-DNP
BSN-to-DNP Program Details: If you are a registered nurse with a BSN who is interested in FNP programs in Wyoming, you may need to look no further than the University of Wyoming. Currently, the school is home to the only accredited FNP program in the state. The program admits new students once per year in the fall semester. After the priority admission deadline, rolling admission is offered on a space available basis.
While the program is designed to be distance accessible, it is not entirely online. Campus visits are required each semester throughout the program. Campus visits consist of intensive experiences, clinical days with faculty, intensive skills sessions, and days dedicated to presenting your DNP project.
The program is formatted for full-time study and is designed to be completed in three years. The schedule includes three fall semesters, three spring semesters, and two summer semesters. Additionally, during the third year of the program, you will complete a term in January to finalize your DNP Scholarly Project.
The FNP program is a post-baccalaureate to Doctor of Nursing Practice pathway designed with a focus on rural primary care. The curriculum features a 73-credit plan of study. In your first year, you will take core DNP courses, including Evidence-Based Practice for Advanced Nursing, Health Behavior Change, and Advanced Pathophysiology. As you progress in the program, the curriculum incorporates FNP courses and specialty-relevant clinical practicums. You will study Advanced Health Assessment for Family Nurse Practitioners, Diagnosis & Management of the Primary Care Client for Family Nurse Practitioners, and Wellness for Adults.
Students in the BSN-to-DNP Family Nurse Practitioner program complete 1,080 practicum hours, including 960 hours of direct patient care. Clinical experiences occur in a variety of outpatient settings encompassing family practice, women’s health, pediatrics, and adult health.
Clinical placements and rotation assignments are coordinated by program faculty and staff, which means you can feel confident that you will have varied and adequate opportunities to develop and hone the skills you need to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. A few states allow students to complete clinical rotations outside of Wyoming. However, because state regulations frequently change, the School of Nursing recommends that all students prepare for clinicals in Wyoming. (Planning ahead for possible relocation may be necessary.)
BSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: The School of Nursing uses a holistic approach to determine eligible candidates for admission. Individuals from diverse backgrounds with a strong desire to be healthcare leaders in rural primary health are preferred. To be eligible for the program, you must have a BSN from a nationally accredited nursing program and an unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in Wyoming and need to maintain an active RN license throughout the entirety of the program.
When applying to the program, you will be required to submit verification of your academic and employment history via transcripts, a resume, and a curriculum vitae. You also need to submit three letters of professional recommendation, an admission essay, and copies of any professional licenses and certifications. Additionally, personal interviews with program faculty are required. Interviews are by invitation only and conducted online.

• The University of Wyoming has a long history of nursing education. The school first partnered with Ivinson Memorial Hospital in 1918 to provide science courses to the hospital’s student nurses, becoming an integral part of what would later become formal nursing education in the state. In 1951, the school established its first nursing program, with the first class graduating in 1954. Through the years, the program has expanded, now offering the only accredited FNP program in Wyoming.

In addition to a broad range of clinical experiences, at the University of Wyoming, you will have opportunities to learn in the school’s Clinical Simulation Center. The Center has a variety of resources, including low-fidelity and high-fidelity mannikins, as well as simulated patients that can talk, bleed, and even sweat!
• The University of Wyoming’s FNP program has a low faculty-to-student ratio. This ratio allows for more individualized attention and support for students.
