BSN-to-DNP Program Details: If you are a registered nurse with plans to become a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and you want to provide care to clients in rural communities, the University of Wyoming offers an excellent program to help you achieve your goals! The post-baccalaureate Doctor of Nursing Practice program with the option to specialize as a PMHNP is designed for students who plan to live and work with rural and underserved populations.

This PMHNP program in Wyoming is designed for full-time study and takes three years to complete. Rolling admissions occur on a space available basis, with classes admitted in the fall semester. The program is distance-accessible but not entirely online. Coursework is delivered in both synchronous and asynchronous formats, at the discretion of the instructor.

During the first year of the program, you will visit campus for orientation in the fall and for an intensive experience in the spring. The second year of the program includes a one-week “Clinical Boot Camp” and additional multi-day intensives each semester. The final year of the program requires one or two visits per semester for intensive skills sessions, clinical days with faculty, and your presentation of DNP Scholarly Project.

The post-bachelor’s PMHNP program features a 75-credit curriculum. Your studies will begin with courses like Theoretical Foundations of Advanced Practice Nursing, Evidenced-Based Practice for Advanced Nursing, and Population & Health Policies. As you progress through the program, you will take more advanced classes, including Neurobiology & Psychopharmacology, Psychotherapy Models, and Advanced Pathophysiology. The Psychiatric Mental Health NP program includes 960 direct patient care clinical hours and at least 120 indirect hours. Clinical practicums occur in a variety of outpatient and inpatient settings. Colorado, Idaho, and Utah are the only states outside of Wyoming where students may complete clinicals. The DNP faculty and staff coordinate clinical placements. If you wish to complete your clinicals outside of Wyoming, clinical faculty will collaborate with you to ensure you have qualified preceptors and appropriate legal contracts in place.

BSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: To be considered for admission to the BSN-to-DNP PMHNP program, you must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing earned from a nationally accredited nursing program or an anticipated graduation from a nationally accredited BSN program. An active, unencumbered Wyoming RN license is required by May 1 of the first Spring semester of the program and must be maintained throughout the duration of the program.

In addition to completing an online application, you are required to provide transcripts from your BSN program reflecting a minimum GPA of 3.0. Other supporting documentation to be provided include three professional letters of recommendation, an admission essay describing your goals as a DNP-prepared PMHNP, and a curriculum vitae or professional resume. An interview with program faculty may be required. Interviews are by invitation only and are conducted online.
