In this program, you will study Advanced Embryology & Neonatal Physiology, Advanced Health Assessment for the Nurse Practitioner Role: Neonatal Population Focus, and Advanced Principles of Pharmacology & Management. You will also participate in at least 600 clinical hours in Level III and Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
MSN Admission Requirements: For admission consideration to the MSN program at the University of Connecticut, you need a baccalaureate degree in nursing earned at an accredited nursing program and an active, unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse. Before enrolling in any clinical practicum course, you must also show proof of having at least two years of full-time RN-level work experience in a Level III Neonatal ICU.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and evaluated upon receipt of all required documentation. You are required to submit a written response to essay questions, three letters of recommendation (one academic and two professional), a current resume, and transcripts from all post-secondary schools you previously attended. Your cumulative college GPA must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
BSN-to-DNP Program Details: The BSN-to-DNP program offers the opportunity for baccalaureate-prepared nurses to earn a master’s degree, specializing as a Neonatal NP, and then progress toward completing a terminal Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. The program features a flexible online learning format, making it accessible to nurses from diverse locations. Virtual simulations and in-person clinicals are utilized to complement the interactive online modules. Two campus visits are required to complete lab simulations and other training.
This neonatal nurse practitioner program in Connecticut requires the completion of 76-82 credits. The first part of the curriculum is dedicated to APRN courses, specialty-relevant courses, and clinical practicums. The remaining curriculum includes doctoral coursework, including the completion of a DNP Scholarly Project. All DNP students are required to complete a minimum of 1,000 post-baccalaureate clinical hours. Any clinical hours not completed in the master’s component of this program will be completed when you transition to the DNP component.
BSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: The post-baccalaureate DNP program is available to Registered Nurses who hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a regionally accredited college or university and have a current RN license. You must have at least two years of full-time work experience in a Level III NICU before beginning clinicals. In addition to completing an online application, you are required to provide three letters of reference, a copy of your current resume, and a written response to essay questions. You must also submit transcripts from each college or university you have attended. Transcripts should reflect a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
Post-Graduate Certificate Program Details: The Post-Graduate Certificate program is an ideal choice for nurses who have completed a master’s degree in nursing and now wish to earn the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner certification. This program admits students in the fall and typically takes an average of five semesters to complete, including one summer session.
To earn the PGC, you are required to complete a minimum of 26 credits and at least 600 precepted clinical hours. Coursework is delivered online with two campus visits required during the program. Clinical practicums are arranged collaboratively with coordinators and Clinical Placement Officers. Clinicals will be conducted in Level III and Level IV Neonatal ICUs under the direct supervision of neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners.
Post-Graduate Certificate Admission Requirements: To be considered for admission to the Post-Graduate Certificate program, you must have earned an MSN or DNP from an accredited nursing program and hold a current, unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse and current APRN certification in another specialty. You are required to have at least two years of work experience in a Level III NICU practicing as an RN. Additionally, you must provide a current resume, transcripts from all colleges or universities (with a college GPA of 3.0 or better), three letters of reference, and an admission essay.
