One option the school offers is the RN-to-MSN program with the Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner specialty.

With classes predominantly online, you have the flexibility you need to balance school with family, work, and other responsibilities. The program requires the completion of 61 credits and 630 clinical hours. Some classes in the curriculum include Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Assessment, Management, & Evaluation, Advanced Physiology/Pathophysiology, Clinical Pharmacotherapeutics, and Health Policy & Population Health.

RN-to-MSN Admission Requirements: Admission to the RN-to-MSN program is for registered nurses who hold an associate degree or diploma in nursing from an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited nursing program. Candidates must have a current, unrestricted license to practice as an RN in the United States with practice privileges in Mississippi and at least one year of experience working as a Registered Nurse in critical or emergency care. Applicants are required to complete an admission application and submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended. A cumulative undergraduate GPA or a nursing GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required. Transcripts should reflect the completion of all prerequisite courses with a minimum grade of “C” for each course. An interview with the program faculty may be required.

MSN Program Details: Registered nurses with a baccalaureate degree can choose from two Acute Care NP specialties via the MSN program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center: Acute and Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. The MSN program accepts new students in the fall of each year.

The Primary/Acute Care Pediatric NP program is a 58-credit pathway that can be completed in just two years of full-time study. This ACNP program in Mississippi requires the completion of 990 clinical hours. The Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP program requires 45 credits and a minimum of 630 clinical hours.

MSN Admission Requirements: To be eligible for admission to the MSN program, candidates must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited nursing program, evidence of a current, unencumbered RN license with authorization to practice in Mississippi, and one year of experience as a Registered Nurse. Applicants must provide official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions reflecting a cumulative or nursing grade point average of at least 3.0. Some candidates are required to participate in an interview with program faculty.

BSN-to-DNP Program Details: If you are an RN with a bachelor’s degree and you want to earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice and specialize in acute care, the BSN-to-DNP program offered at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is a great option. New cohorts are admitted each fall. You can complete the program in three years or eight semesters.

The BSN-to-DNP Adult Gerontology ACNP program features a 74-credit curriculum. Your study plan will consist of advanced nursing and DNP core courses, specialty-specific courses, clinicals, and a DNP Project. The program includes 1,230 clinical hours, which are earned through direct patient care and completion of your Scholarly DNP Project.

BSN-to-DNP Admission Requirements: Candidates seeking admission to the post-baccalaureate DNP program need a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited institution, a current RN license with eligibility to practice in Mississippi, and at least one year of clinical work experience as an RN in a critical care or emergency department. Applicants must submit a completed application, a Personal Statement, three letters of reference, and official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended. Transcripts should show completion of at least one statistics course and one research course at the undergraduate or graduate level and a cumulative college GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 grading scale. Some candidates are asked to attend an admission interview, as well.

Post-Graduate Certificate Program Details: Having already completed a graduate degree does not mean you cannot pursue further education and specialization. In fact, one of the things I love most about nursing is that there are so many opportunities to enhance your education and broaden your scope of practice. At the University of Mississippi Medical Center, you can pursue a Post-Graduate APRN certificate specializing as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.

An individualized plan of study will be developed based on an analysis of transcripts from your previous graduate nursing degree. Students with a certification in another APRN specialty and who have experience working in emergency or intensive care will complete a minimum of 500 clinical practicum hours. Non-APRN students complete up to 630 clinical hours.

Post-Graduate Certificate Admission Requirements: To be considered for admission to the Post-Graduate Certificate program, you must have a Master of Science in Nursing degree or higher from an institution accredited by the ACEN or CCNE. Applicants must have an unencumbered RN license with eligibility to practice in Mississippi and at least one year of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse in an emergency department or critical care unit. Candidates must submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities previously attended reflecting a minimum cumulative college grade point average of 3.0. An interview may be required as the final step in the application process.
