The post-baccalaureate DNP with nurse anesthesia specialization is a full-time program designed to be completed in three years or 10 semesters. New classes start once each academic year. The first year of didactic courses is primarily on campus and is followed by a combination of didactic and clinical instruction. After the first year of the program, many BSN-to-DNP courses are delivered via a Hyflex format, which includes a combination of online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses.
The 91-credit curriculum plan features classes, including Advanced Principles of Nurse Anesthesia Practice, Advanced Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Advanced Pharmacology for Nurse Anesthesia, and Foundational Principles of Nurse Anesthesia. In compliance with the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, students complete a minimum of 600 cases and 2,000 clinical practicum hours.
Admission Requirements: Candidates seeking admission to the BSN-to-DNP program at Rhode Island College must have a baccalaureate degree in nursing earned from an NLNAC- or CCNE-accredited program, a current unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in both the State of Rhode Island and the State of Massachusetts, and a minimum of one year of critical care experience as a registered nurse. Applicants are required to have current American Heart Association BLS, PALS, and ACLS certification, and CCRN certification is preferred.
All candidates must provide three professional references (one from a clinical supervisor), a professional resume or curriculum vitae, official transcripts for all colleges and universities previously attended, a Statement of Intent, and a completed application form. A minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 is required, including a preferred 3.0 undergraduate GPA for all science courses. Completion of Chemistry 106 or an undergraduate course in organic chemistry completed within the past seven years with a minimum grade of “C” is required. Additionally, all candidates must participate in an admission interview.
