Written By: Editorial Staff @ NursingProcess.org

As a women’s health nurse practitioner, or WHNP, you will provide a variety of services designed specifically for women. These services include fertility and maternity services and other reproductive healthcare including the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and annual exams for illness prevention. As an WHNP, you will earn $101,520 per year on average, which is in line with the average annual salary for all advanced practice nurse practitioners (APRNs). Below, we have ranked the best women’s health nurse practitioner programs in the country to help you make the best possible choice when it comes to your education.

Degree Options Available to Become a WHNP

1. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

Program Cost:

An MSN degree is the minimum education you will need to become a WHNP. You can expect to pay anywhere from $9,430 to $88,900 to obtain this degree.

Program Length:

It will take you two to three years to complete an MSN-WHNP program, but if you choose an online WHNP program, you may have as long as five years to complete it.

Curriculum:

The MSN degree courses will focus on core learning such as pharmacology and advanced nursing practice, but you will also take some specialty courses that are specific to women’s health. These classes focus on things like antepartum care, STDs in a community setting, and the female reproductive system throughout the lifecycle. You will also participate in clinicals to prove your understanding of the topics you learn in the classroom. During these clinicals, you will work with women in various settings under the supervision of faculty to hone your knowledge.

2. Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

Program Cost:

To earn your DNP degree, you will spend anywhere from $14,050 to $131,420 depending on the type of program you choose and the specific university.

Program Length:

It will take you five to six years (after you have earned your BSN) to successfully finish a DNP program. This may vary somewhat from one school to the next and whether you choose online, hybrid, or on-campus education.

Curriculum:

DNP-WHNP curriculum expands upon MSN curriculum and puts more focus on leadership, research, and education. You will learn everything you need to know to become a certified WHNP, but you will also gain the insight and knowledge required to teach the next generation of WHNPs at the same time. Like an MSN program, you will need to complete clinicals in a local facility. Depending on your program and career choice, this may include working directly with patients to provide care and assisting a professor in a college or university setting.

What does WHNP Do?

Your WHNP duties will vary depending on your employer and your career choice. You will provide healthcare related to the female body and reproductive system across the entire lifecycle, typically from adolescence through menopause. You may perform annual exams, prescribe birth control, refer patients to surgeons, offer STD treatments in office or by prescription, and aid perimenopausal or menopausal women with reducing their symptoms. You may also monitor women throughout their pregnancies and aid in the labor and delivery processes.

WHNP Scope of Practice

Your scope of practice will ultimately be determined by your state’s board of nursing. You can work in numerous settings, which may include hospitals, OBGYNs’ offices, family planning and fertility clinics, community health centers (including local Health Departments and Planned Parenthood facilities), and various other facilities. Things such as whether you can practice independently or prescribe certain medications without the approval of a physician are dictated by your state’s nursing board.
