It is no secret that technology today is more advanced than ever, and technology in the healthcare industry is booming! As a nurse, I love the way new technologies create easier workflow and help improve patient care quality and outcomes. You may know new technology of some type is invented or introduced almost daily, but do you ever wonder, “What are the top technologies in nursing?”

With so many technological advancements, it is important for nurses to stay abreast of changes and learn as much as possible about what tools and resources are available. In this article, I will share information with you about the 20 top nursing technologies + how they're making a difference.

When Was Technology First Introduced to Nursing?

Nursing technology has been a part of nursing practice for many years. During World War I, nurses learned to advance healthcare practices with minimal resources. In 2004, President George W. Bush signed Executive Order 13335, which established the position of the National Health Information Technology Coordinator and outlined incentives for using health information technology. Since that time, innovations in nursing technology have continued to evolve.

6 Advantages of Using Technology in Nursing

Technology in nursing offers many advantages. Even those among us who are not the most computer-savvy or technologically advanced can see how technological advances positively impact nursing. The following are six advantages of using technology in nursing practice.

ADVANTAGE #1: Technology in Nursing Helps Streamline Tasks

One of the biggest advantages of nursing technology is that we can use automated systems to streamline tasks such as medication administration, patient monitoring, and documenting patient care. Streamlining tasks means nurses have more time to focus on direct patient care.

ADVANTAGE #2: Increased Patient Safety

Some of the best technological advances in nursing include mobile monitoring devices and smart infusion pumps. These devices alert nurses to critical changes in a patient’s status quickly, which makes rapid response possible, decreasing patient risks. Smart beds are equipped with alarms that notify nurses when patients try to get out of bed unassisted and can also be set to rotate pressure areas. These features decrease the risks of falls and injuries and lessen the chance of developing pressure ulcers.

ADVANTAGE #3: We Now Have Research at Our Fingertips!

One of my favorite things about nursing technology is that it has opened so many doors for us to have access to databases worldwide. We can research relevant information and analyze patient data using various nursing technologies, which empowers us to create care plans and interventions based on the best evidence-based studies.

ADVANTAGE #4: Record-Keeping Has Become More Accurate

If you have been a nurse for years like me, you probably remember when every nurse’s note and physician’s order was handwritten then filed into the patients’ charts. We had to print lab and radiology reports and file them, as well. It was time-consuming and, if anyone failed to do their part in documenting or filing appropriate records, it led to errors.

With the implementation of electronic health records (EHRs), we now have a way to streamline documentation in one central location that is accessible to the whole team, which keeps everyone in the loop. Patient records kept in EHRs have fewer errors than those completed by manual record-keeping. Additionally, with the introduction of barcode scanning, billing for healthcare services is easier and has fewer mistakes.

ADVANTAGE #5: Enhanced Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Another major advantage of technology in nursing is that digital access to patient records, research data, and better communication methods make team collaboration much easier. Interdisciplinary teams can access EHRs to review and analyze trends in patient symptoms and responses to treatments and collaborate to create, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans focused on each area of the patient’s needs.

ADVANTAGE #6: Advances in Nursing Technology Are Key to Quality Nursing Education

Having worked in clinical nursing positions and as a healthcare educator, I have seen firsthand the impact that technological advances in nursing have had on nursing education. Today, many nursing schools have simulation labs that feature high-fidelity mannequins and other technologies designed to provide students with opportunities to learn hands-on skills in a safe, controlled environment. Because of these advances, students are more prepared for clinical practicums and more at ease when it comes to providing direct patient care.
